The site…

Hi there internet person,

I’ve had this site for about a decade at this point, since the early Counter-Strike days in the 00s. Although its changed the design at the halfway point, then it’s remained something I really enjoyed having around to just post things on my mind or share links.

However at some point it went from being something I enjoyed updating and slowly started becoming an annoyance. Most of the time this site has been functioning as a hub for silly internet videos and a personal update once in a while. Although I’ve heard that some of my old friends use this site as way of checking up on my once in a while (Since I’m not part of the Facebook phenomenon), then that portion of my posts has seemed seldom at best lately. What made me slightly tired was also that I felt obligated to keep the site on life support by posting something at least once per week, which usually resulted in weak mindless entries, rather than more intelligent discussions video game design or other things I actually think I have a valid opinion on and would love to discuss with the people visiting the site.

What you’re probably thinking right now is correct; I’m shutting this blog down. My short stint doing Youtube videos was a last stand kind of thing at making this work, trying to see if it felt right, but the more self-aware part myself seriously can’t do those anymore without feeling like a fool.

Although the plan is to shut down the blog portion of the site, then it will still remain in the form of my portfolio (Still got that damn mazy.net domain for a couple more years :D ). The idea is to get a brand new design and focus primarily on my professional work in the games industry, essentially boiling this site down to the stuff that really matters to me.

I don’t know if any of the people that still follow this blog will actually be saddened by this, I highly doubt that at this point. Either way I look at it, this seems like the right choice. But although I’m not saddened by letting the blog go as it is today, then it’s the history, the legacy, that this site has in some ways carried for me. The golden days when I was still in school, having tons of time and often updating the site multiple times daily, showing off my new maps and other stuff from the community. This site has endured much, almost being there since my first baby steps in level design, to working at multiple mods, getting through school, being hired in the industry and finally shipping multiple titles. Chronicling my dream of doing games as a profession until it became true, and beyond.

That’s what saddens me about cutting it loose. But that’s stuff that I’ll always remember anyway and nobody else probably cares about that anyway, and this is about not pretending anymore and having this site stand for what it is. I’ll frequent the Mapcore boards anyway, a community that thankfully still seems like it’ll never go away, and if there’s anything then don’t hesitate to drop me a mail.

Might take a while before I got the portfolio ready, but until then don’t expect any updates, obviously ;)

Cheers lads!
Mazy

I do see your point Mazy, i have to admit i will be dissapointed to see the youtube videos go, they went down well with a cup of coffee ;D~

I guess i should start heading back to the Mapcore boards.

Hah, yes it’s a shame but so long as you keep posting on MapCore at least I still get to see your opinions on things. That’s the main thing I like about MapCore: all the guys who have had enough of maintaining blogs still share their thoughts there. :) )

Keep the old posts around somewhere, though! I hate to see a wonderful part of the internet die and disappear.

It’s a pitty and while I hate to see it go, I have to admit that you’re probably right. It doesn’t live up to the old days anymore and if it just annoys you to update it - why bother? I will keep the site in good memories though, the most interesting times were when you talked about the development of your levels, showed screenshots and released the maps via this site. Now that all this doesn’t happen anymore, it kind of lost its point. At least you can still use it as a place to show your finished, professional work :)

Thanks Mazy for many years of entertaining updates!

    That sucks D:

I think you should do what johnsto did with his blog: leave a long list of level design related or interesting posts in the index. There’s useful information here that would be a shame if got lost. I personally enjoyed reading your mapping retrospective a lot. Or the posts you described your first experiences at IO, how the interview went etc… That surely could be useful to other people.

But keep it up! Maybe it’s time to get back to personal projects again now that you got rid of the achievements addiction? Or learn new skills?

    long live to teh mazy~~

Aww, that was a sad post to read :( I have dropped by this blog from time to time over quite some years now. But it is only cool that you kept it going for so long, the rest of us gave up many years ago :P

Now however you have no excuse anymore: Get on Facebook man! :)

  8. Reolged Says:

I concur with the comments expressing both sadness and understanding. One thing is for sure though, I look forward to see what you’ll come up with next :)

has been a great ride but i am sure the NEW site will be way bett0r !

  10. Skjalg Says:

    My condolences.

I’ve been reading this blog since the dawn of time and it saddens me that it will be dead.

You should definatly do what Minos is suggesting, leave a link to the old records on the new portfolio site :)

  11. Mazy Says:

Thanks guys for all the kind words. It’s good to hear that some of you have fond memories of the site, and that it actually contributed something to the world, for better or worse ;)

I’ll look into archiving this site and the old site, the old site is super easy since it’s just HTML, but this one might be a tad trickier.

    Anyways, thanks.

    Shiet… :(

Looking forward to your new site man.

  13. Martin "Kreigore" Tegnemark Says:

Aww :( Where am I now gonna get all my silly videos from? Looking forward to the new site!

  14. Squad Says:

Sad to hear that, Mazy. I still check here from time to time and have been doing so almost since the beginning, I think (or at least, for as long as I can remember ;) )
Funny actually, when I checked here again I was just thinking that it’s amazing how long this site has been around when so many others have disappeared. Oh, the irony, heh :)

I can see your point though. But it would be cool if you could somehow archive this site and put a link to it on your new site.
    Keep up the good work!

  15. Stratty Says:

Everything comes to an end eventually. This site carries a lot of great history though. Thanks for that!

I should visit Mapcore more often these days.

Sad to see it go, but yeah this post was made in Feb and I’m only checking it now in [almost] June!!

I used to love reading your thoughts and georff reviews of every game and movie ever released :P but as others have said, once this stopped happening, and the level stuff stopped happening it became more of a facebook-status style blog :)

Still, I can’t wait to see what you do with the site… I love reading behind-the-scenes mapping stuff, simonoc.com was the inspiration behind me finally making my own site, and I’d love to see something similar done based on your professional contributions to maps in the IO games :)
